Reno Monument on South Mountain Battlefield, Postcards, Circa 1910. Major Jesse General Reno commanded the Ninth Army Corps at South Mountain while its nominal commander, Major General Ambrose Burnside, temporarily commanded a wing of the army. Reno was mortally wounded by friendly fire in the darkness at the end of the battle. (This also explains the prevalence of the given name Reno in our area.)
